I know it can't be easy managing the dependencies between these apps but two issues have been going on long enough that they need to be mentioned. Now that Macromedia's products have been combined with Adobe's arsenal, the suites have a ton of programs, with the Master Collection being the largest. Advertisementīefore I get to the EPUB features, let me cover the only remarkable thing about installation and updating that warrants mentioning. I'm glad Adobe listened to users on this one there's nothing worse than a bad interface change kept around just to save face and/or time.
CS5 forced you to grab the point and move it, which could be a problem if your image imported and the point was hanging way off the pasteboard.

Other than these features and the EPUB ones I'll be covering in more detail below, some predictable changes were made in CS5.5: support for newer PDF standards and better PDF tag and accessibility support.Īlso, for those like me who were annoyed by the change, the Scale and Rotate tools once again set the relative center point when you click the first time. It's a potentially great feature that just needs a bit of finish. Also, I think many people would like to be able to make style changes to linked copy without having it overridden by copy changes, so they could just avoid this feature entirely due to these limitations.

Editing the instance can't update the master block of text, so any changes done on those instanced blocks are overwritten by the master once changes are made on those-it seems short-sighted to have to hunt down the original block of copy. It's a simple enough workflow but it doesn't feel entirely finished. A change to the master block will instantly put the familiar caution symbol in the Links palette to show that the instance is out of sync with the master: Once you make the instanced block of copy, a link is placed in the Links palette, similar to referenced images. The name pretty much explains this new feature: you create some text, link it to another block, and an instance of that text is placed in the other block. The bulk of Indesign CS5.5's new tools are concentrated around EPUB but a few changes also affect the standard tools. Indesign CS5.5 looks to fill these workflow holes: covers can now be embedded, flow can be strictly controlled, and it looks like one app can finally handle the e-book creation process from start to finish.

Features were missing that just made the solution lacking as a whole, and you'd invariably have to use other tools to hack at the unzipped EPUB code to really have it render the way you want within e-readers. Until recently, the Indesign EPUB features for creating e-books felt tacked on. That puts a lot of pressure on their tools-and Indesign CS5.5 looks to be a reliable team player.
Publishers now have to hit multiple formats for maximum sales, while having little extra money to support the additional staff needed to keep their publications in the black. It's fair to say that publishing is in the middle of a long transition period, and nowhere is that transition more obvious than in publishing software.
